Cosmic possibilities for
Polish companies
Infosystem’99 Pavilion 28 Warsaw, Poznań:
13-16 April 1999 Internet Protocol (IP) available
at SkyWAN network
- X.25 and IP based network possible to be built
in SkyWAN.Transfer.
- Users may now choose between options best
responding to specific situations.
DataTrans Company Ltd licensed operator of all-Poland
data transmission network has enriched its offer
for SkyWAN.Transfer satellite data transmission
service giving a possibility of a direct use of
Internet Protocol (IP). This information was first
given to the clients during the Infosystem ’99
fair in Poznań. Thanks to this new offer clients
may now choose the protocol on which the their
network will be created. X.25 protocol is one
of unquestionable technical values. Nevertheless
with some systems using the X.25 protocol increases
the cost of investment. Therefore the number of
clients interested in Internet Protocol is growing.
This new offer from SkyWAN.Transfer enables a
direct connection IP based equipment to VSAT terminals
and eliminate some expensive elements of the system
used in networks with X.25 protocol. The weak
point is higher network traffic generated by the
user. One should also remember that not all solutions
working well in LAN networks would provide the
same effectiveness in WAN networks Internet Protocol
has become very popular by being used for Internet
purposes. Internet Protocol has been foreseen
in many systems as introducing it causes no bigger
troubles (numerous specialists, repeatable solutions
for most cases etc ) Internet Protocol is especially
interesting for these customers who are planning
to connect a significant number of small systems
(eg Retail station).
In such case X.25 protocol accounts for a significant
part of the cost of the system while with the
Internet Protocol, it is possible to use mass-produced
components, such as, NIC. By adding this option
to its offer, DataTrans Company presents the customers
with higher flexibility in finding a satisfying
solution- they may now analyze all the factors
related to specific protocol and make the best
choice according to their purposes.

SkyWAN presentation on
Infosystem ‘99
fair- Pawilon 28 - Polman '99 Warszawa, Poznań:
13-16 kwietnia 1999
- SkyWAN.Transfer transaction services- attractive
solution for data transmission troubles for
many companies in Poland
- DataTrans connects 200 teller machines of
Euronet/Bankomat 24 network
- Popular Internet Protocol (IP) now offered
in SkyWAN satellite data transmission
- Lower investment costs for WAN network IP
users
DataTrans Company Ltd licensed operator of all-Poland
data transmission network presents on Infosystem
’99 fair, new possibilities of SkyWAN data transmission
network. The company’s presence on the market
is a result of constantly growing interest in
technically advanced teleinformation services
in Poland. More and more companies have noticed
a possibility of improvement thanks to the use
of an efficient information system. Satellite
data transmission allows to arrange very quickly
the connection for many company branches- practically
independently from their location and this undoubtedly
means that the system has a right to be called-
efficient. During the fair, on the stand of the
DataTrans Company one may be shown all the virtues
of the satellite data transmission used in the
ways of communication known as transaction systems.
This method is included in the DataTrans .Transfer
offer and provides a wide range of applications.
A withdrawal from a teller machine in a distant
bank branch is an example of transaction- an exchange
of information with mother/main/home branch. This
service may be automated even further if done
with a teller machine- here the use of satellite
technology is especially attractive as the teller
machine may be located in places most convenient
for customers regardless of the presence of the
network. Reliability and an ease in connection
planning resulted in the recent connection of
200th Euronet/Bankomat 24. teller machine. It
is worth noticing that satellite communication
allows for temporary teller machines connection
in holiday resorts. An example of a different
use of SkyWAN services is supply of communication
for popular restaurant chains.
Here also reliability and quick and easy access
to services played a crucial role no matter of
restaurant location. SkyWAN services may be used
for a very wide group of systems. Financial systems
is just one example. Transaction solutions allow
for booking in hotels and public means of transportation.
They may also significantly increase effectiveness
of managing the stocks scattered in different
parts of Poland, and shipments in trade organizations.
Since the beginning of April SkyWAN.
Transfer offer has included a possibility of a
direct IP protocol supply causing significantly
lower investment costs for users of IP protocol
based WAN networks. They may now directly connect
IP based equipment to VSAT terminals and eliminate
routers, an expensive elements of the system used
in networks with X.25 protocol. Internet Protocol
has became very popular by being used for Internet
purposes and has been foreseen to be used in many
systems Apart from SkyWAN.Transfer, DataTrans
is preparing a solution for customers who demand
a satellite communication with very high transmission
speed, allowing to sent big information files
in short time. It is being noticed that costs
caused by the ground network failure are higher
than price of a backup satellite network of similar
characteristics. Simultaneously, there is a growing
need of distributing information to large number
of terminals and here the satellite technology
gives the most effective and economical solutions.
These phenomena are very much stimulated by more
and more common use of information systems managing
multimedia information. Videoconferences, access
to multimedia databases, dedicated advertisement,
remote training. For these purposes DataTrans
offers SkyWAN.Cargo and SkyWAN.Akces services.

200th Euronet/Bankomat24
bank teller machine in SkyWAN.Transfer data transmission
network.
Warsaw November 1998
DataTrans Company Ltd an operator of all-Poland
data transmission network has informed about a
200th Euronet/Bankomat24 bank teller machine as
a consequence of contract signed a year ago. It
should be emphasized that when the companies were
starting cooperation DataTrans was ensuring transmission
with the maximum speed of 9600 bps, while today,
just after one year, the transaction data are
sent with the speed of 38.400bps. Satellite data
transmission network is a solution offering a
very high quality of transmissions well as accessibility
(very few failures and damages). In several towns
there have been events of resigning from somewhat
cheaper (in that case) ground data transmission
network in favor of satellite solutions. Satellite
data transmission services are especially attractive
for those customers who need to ensure data circulation
among numerous geographically spread units.
At present, there is over a half of the 386 Euronet
bank teller machines connected to SkyWAN network.
In September Data.Trans and Euronet/Bankomat24
signed a contract confirming cooperation and further
expansion of the network. Companies like Tricon
(restaurant chain) and British Petrol (petrol
station network) have joined the group of DataTrans
most prestigious clients. “DataTrans strategy
is focused on the quality development of our network.
Beside the throughput, there are other parameters
that play an important role: possibility of effective
use of various communication protocols or guaranteed
throughput for users demanding it Following the
economical development in Poland, we expect that
quite soon there will be a serious growth in demand
for high quality telecommunication systems. Undoubtedly
the liberalization (rise of competition) in banking
or insurance sector will help this prognosis come
true. ”- said Robert Mołdach. DataTrans company
President of Board. “Appearance of well known
world-wide operating companies changes the expectations
towards operators. A CitiBank credit card holder
should not leave a bank teller machine irritated
because the low quality connection unables the
verification of transaction. It truly is a great
satisfaction when a customer high- valuing quality
is satisfied with services we provide and willing
to continue the cooperation”- he added.

TELEINFORMATION
Satellite data transmission networks in Poland
Data via space
A Warsaw DataTrans company is closing to 200 VSAT
satellite terminals installed. In nearly two years
after being granted the license for supply of
satellite data transmission services the company
is one of the main operators of this kind in Poland.
As we were informed by the company’s new chosen
President of Board, Mr. Robert Mołdach, the company
is prepared to provide high band transmission
service if such demand appears. Last year, the
company signed a contract with Bankomat24/Euronet
for satellite data transmission for bank teller
machines.
The contract covered connection of 500 teller
machines in total, with 100 units in the first
stage. This contract places the company in the
position of a leading satellite data transmission
operator in Poland. DataTrans Company Ltd was
incorporated in Poland, as a company with a majority
of Polish capital. DataTrans main shareholder
is an American company GTECH Corp. offering in
Poland LOTTO lottery systems.
By developing its infrastructure, SkyWAN network,
the company may now offer a transmission with
speed of 38.400bps. According to Mr. Mołdach the
interest shown to satellite solutions is constantly
growing, with highest demand for the supply of
solutions for transaction systems and standard
applications for companies and administration.
Polish companies are very quickly entering a phase
of broad data transmission networks.
Among the clients of the Warsaw company, there
are companies, who basing on data transmission
services, have introduced the SAP management system
in their geographically spread units. The SkyWAN
service for eg. bank teller machine company is
provided on the basis of a teleport in Legionowo-
a satellite network node operating VSAT terminals.
This infrastructure and service has been created
for Users, interested in both: transaction handling
(deposit and/or withdrawal registration, authorizing
the withdrawals from teller machines or payments
with credit cards) as well as narrow-band batch
transmission (transferring the daily reports,
pricelists, catalogues) Satellite network allows
for digitally coded high band access to server
bases as well as for low band transaction systems
services and narrow-band batch transmissions.
Several months ago DataTrans and PolskaOnLine-
company providing Internet services, declared
that they have started building a new satellite
teleinformation infrastructure- SkyWAN.Online
satellite data transmission network. In all area
of Poland there will be access nodes of this network
available, so that companies and institutions
would be able to take advantage of data transmission,
internet/intranet as well as sending multimedia
information via satellite and not only through
cable networks. The latter do not have access
everywhere, while satellite communication equipment
may be installed in virtually any location. Asy.WAN.Online
is to supply satellite data transmission with
the speed of 8Mbps and this opens possibilities
for new internet/intranet applications and formerly
mentioned multimedia information transferring.
Further use of newly created SkyWAN.
Online network might be influenced by the fact,
that satellite communication is now becoming more
and more attractive as far as the cost factor
is concerned- not only for big, well-to-do companies.
Because of the advancement of technology, prices
for a set of equipment necessary for the users
of this communication type is comparable to the
price of an average class Personal Computer. As
companies’ representatives declare, the newest
satellite data transaction technologies- so far
used only for military purposes, are to used in
the new network.

1998
Warsaw companies create a new Poland-wide teleinformation
network for business purposes. SkyWAN.Online-
polish satellite Internet. Warsaw companies DataTrans
and PolskaOnLine, declared that they have started
building a new satellite teleinformation infrastructure-
SkyWAN.Online satellite data transmission network.
In all area of Poland there will be access nodes
of this network available, so that companies and
institutions would be able to take advantage of
data transmission, internet/intranet as well as
sending multimedia information via satellite and
not only through cable networks.
The latter do not have access everywhere, while
satellite communication equipment may be installed
in virtually any location. SkyWAN.Online is to
supply satellite data transmission with the speed
of 8Mbps and this opens possibilities for new
internet/intranet applications and formerly mentioned
multimedia information transferring.
An alternative for cables. In locations where
the digital data transmission network already
exists, the satellite one might become supplementary
solution- freeing customers from the throughput
limits of the existing infrastructure in distant
connections. A promising field for new network
may also be connecting already existing local
and urban computer networks as well as providing
them with internet/intranet access. In Poland
more and more companies offering Poland-wide services
are using or attempting to use transmission networks
connecting all the company branches.
SkyWAN.Online can open new possibilities for these
companies. Should they already be supplied with
communication means, it may expand existing resources,
eliminate weak points of communication network
or create supplementary connections. If the new
communication infrastructure is to be built, satellite
network may in many cases be more competitive
than classical solutions as far as investment
costs and time are concerned. Network throughput
scalability might be also very important in the
new network, offering a possibility of higher
transmission speed following the company development.
First step First step to the new network creation
is, according to the contract between DataTrans
and PolskaOnLine, connecting the already functioning
satellite data transmission network of the first
company to the resources of the second one (servers,
access devices and ground telecommunication links)
Both companies granted several years ago with
telecommunication licenses by the Minister of
Communication have gained their position on the
market.
DataTrans Company Limited is a polish countrywide
data transmission operator and provides data transmission
services by virtue of a concession, granted by
the Minister of Communication in September 1996.
.DataTrans Company Ltd was incorporated in Poland,
as a company with a majority of Polish capital.
DataTrans main shareholder is an American company
GTECH Corp. offering in Poland LOTTO lottery systems.
GTECH Corporation is a company with great and
worldwide experience in operation of all-country
on-line systems, transaction-transferring systems.
Partners’ potential Last year, the company signed

interested in both: transaction handling (deposit
and/or withdrawal registration, authorizing the
withdrawals from teller machines or payments with
credit cards) as well as narrow-band batch transmission
(transferring the daily reports, pricelists, catalogues)
Satellite network allows for digitally coded high
band access to server bases as well as for low
band transaction systems services and narrow-band
batch transmissions. DataTrans partner, Polish-American
company PolskaOnLine was established 4 years ago.
It is one of the first and now most important
Internet systems integrators. For two years, is
has been providing services in the whole area
of Poland, with the network of 8 regional partners.
Last January there was a fusion of PolskaOnLine
and Biuro Usług Komputerowych BT company. As a
consequence, PolskaOnLine human potential are
specialists from the field of Internet, analysis,
designing and introducing information management
systems. At present PolskaOnLine main activities
are systems integration, data transmission services
(access to internet, establishing corporate systems)
and Internet publications and Internet information
services.
Further use of newly created SkyWAN.Online network
might be influenced by the fact, that satellite
